Treatments

Manual Therapy
Manual therapy includes massage, trigger point release and joint mobilisation and forms a large part of our treatments. Manual therapy by skilled therapists can be the perfect tool to reduce pain and restore function.

Joint Mobilisation
Mobilisation of a joint is a passive movement used to help stiff joint surfaces glide. This technique is often applied in a rhythmical motion to encourage movement, relax muscles and aid lubrication of the joint.

Biomechanical Assessment
Many of the symptoms we see stem from biomechanical or muscular imbalances a person may have developed over time, or through the specific actions of sport or work. Without assessing and addressing these problems ,symptoms may ease, but could return in time. We aim to tackle the root cause of pain and encourage lasting benefits from each treatment session.

Treatment Before and After Surgery
Treatment before surgery is useful in providing advice on the operation to be performed, plan strengthening , reducing limb swelling and restore joint range. All of which can considerably reduce recovery time post op.
Physiotherapy after surgery aims to restore normal active function. This is achieved through the setting of specific goals and manual and exercise therapy all following rehabilitation protocols based on the consultants guidelines. We aim to get you back to the activities you enjoy as soon as possible.

Muscle Energy Techniques (MET)
Muscle energy techniques can be particularly beneficial in restoring joint range, correcting muscular and postural imbalance and for the prevention of sporting injuries. Based on Neuromuscular principles MET’s utilise stretch, massage and resistance to ensure muscles and joints work at their optimum.

Electrotherapy
When clinically indicated electrotherapy in the form of Ultrasound & TENS are used to encourage and speed the healing of damaged ligaments, tendons and muscles. Fully portable and painless, electrotherapy provides an additional tool to get you better, faster.

Core Stability/Pilates
Promoting core stability is an ethos all Athena physio’s share. From lower back pain to work related pain to sports performance, core stability provides the essential support the body requires for movement. We use modified Pilates in combination with manual guidance to promote the correct activation of postural muscles in order to rehabilitate & prevent injury and maximise physical performance.

Guided Exercise
Athena Physio’s need your help! In order to achieve the best possible results often clients will be given some exercises to conduct in their own time. This wont mean hours of sweat and tears just a few simple targeted activities which can make all the difference to your recovery. Don’t worry, all instructions will be written out with pictures to guide you.
